I had driven over the Gotthard pass a month before this picture was taken. At the time I had thought that it might have been the last time for the year.
Luckily, the pass road was still open when I came back to Ticino in mid October. I was surprised, however, to see that winter was already close: apart from the missing snow, all the grass and plants had withered. I left the car and went a for a little walk.
The high mountains have always exerted fascination over me. The sterile and cold power poles increased the sensation of lifelessness that the scenery had on me, so I decided to include them in the pictures that I wanted to make. The small bush in the foreground does not readily catch one's eye, which is why I chose this picture over the many pictures that I took on the Gotthard that day. The hardly visible foreground matches the rest of the picture: the arid grass, the sterile power pole and the cloudy sky.
