About this Picture

I had spent the afternoon hiking and taking photographs in the upper Valle Maggia in Ticino, Switzerland, and had planned to stay a little longer and wait just for the sunset, hoping for some interesting light conditions. Most hikers that I had met during the day had already left by the time I was mounting my tripod and waiting for the sun to set—I was the only person still there.

It is amazing how quiet the mountains can be. The only perceptible noise apart from the river were some birds—there was nothing else. As with many of my other pictures, its creation is worth as much as the picture itself. It is difficult to describe the scenery in words: the mild summer air, the waning sunlight, how the sunlight caressed the mountain tops.
